Scott Mersman, Cylinder Product Manager,
Polygon Company:
"Intrinsic Sensing Hydraulic and Pneumatic Cylinders"

Polygon teamed up with Sentrinisic LLC to develop and produce a new revolutionary, patent-pending sensing cylinder. This cylinder incorporates a composite cylinder tube, embedded with a resistive film, inserted into the metal outer tube of a cylinder.  AC excitation yields linearly varying voltage amplitude across the cylinder and measurement of voltage of amplitude from piston indicates position, thus providing position feedback.

This intrinsic sensing technology delivers a cost effective, high resolution, highly repeatable sensing cylinder for the mobile equipment market.  Currently, the mobile equipment market relies mostly upon Magnetostrictive sensors, which are robust and offer very high resolution, but are costly and require extra machining of the cylinder components. Now, there is a new technology available.

About Scott Mersman:

Scott Mersman started his fluid power career with Numatics as a Regional Sales Manager in 1989, then progressed to VP of Sales and Marketing for their Actuator division.  Then in 1996 he started his own pneumatic automation distributorship, Modern Automation. In 1999, he was brought back into Numatics to run their Actuator Division which he did until 2006. He left Numatics to work as Cylinder Product Manager with Polygon Company, and has been instrumental in developing the PolySlide Smart Cylinder.
